We believe that a good D&D character is someone who engages with the party, the world and breathes life into the story. Not just a compilation of mechanics like in a video game.
Here are 3 simple things to add to your character to help flesh them out a little -
The simplest of ideas can immensely help give your character a visual representation, such as:
Someone who can't speak lies. Someone who obsessively keeps their weapons maintained.Someone who stares uncomfortably at people. Someone who likes making witty quips/remarks/retorts. Someone who always offers a small prayer before every meaningful interaction.
You can check this video for more examples of gimmicks and aesthetics for your character. Or simply skip to pondering on some of the questions here https://rb.gy/k3mv3r.
Giving your character a driving force, something that pushes their story forward. For it is in adversity that our characters grow! Challenges to overcome to build better versions of ourselves with each passing day!
We all have wants and desires, and so do our characters! What do your characters want? We don't mean short or long-term goals that they'll work towards.
Their wants could be goals of course but what do they want off the top of their heads: Money? Fame? Power? (Whatever that means to your character) Official status? Magical artefacts? Cats?
A want or desire is another element that brings life to your character. So, think about what your (Character's) heart's desire.
