Heard about D&D on a podcast? Enjoyed Baldur's Gate and are looking for more? Always wanted to play, but never got enough people? Had a campaign that sputtered out, or, like so many other games, scheduling ended up being the real BBEG for your attempts to get into this hobby? - Danial
Whatever your backstory might be, let me introduce you to the place that will give you an actual platform and feasible times to play this game! Welcome to Living Chronicles, a heroic D&D based westmarch. However, to fully enjoy this particular format of the game, you must learn some basics. Let's take a quick crash course.
This guide will assume you know the basics of what a TTRPG is and will build upon that understanding.
⚠️ Adhere to and follow the server rules.
The value of life in this world is high, don't kill anything sentient without thinking of the logical consequences of such a thing in a civilized society. However, we understand that this is a monster hunting game, and numerical accidents can happen.
We will give you multiple ways to connect your characters to the core story of the westmarch. However, due to the slow burn nature of a westmarch story, these connections are often vague and loose. Trust in the system, engage and follow these threads. If you can promise us patience, we promise you loads of fun!
Have strong motivations and reactions to immediate crisis. Be a part of the greater picture and collaborate with other characters. Solve and/or create problems in the world. Have a degree of altruistic mentality that can help in being a hero!
Take responsibility of your character's actions and deal with their consequences honestly. Inter character conflict is all right as long as the players are civil with each other and remember this is game. Don't step on each other's toes. Remember this is a westmarch, players can change quest to quest in the same story line. Consider your character's actions carefully, retconning story isn't supported in the server.
The definition of meta gaming is up to you, determine what your character would know and won't know, just conserve your own and your friends' immersion of the world. Please respect the lore and world integrity.
Westmarching is a style of playing D&D as old as the game itself. The modern definition of a westmarch as we have defined it is An open world game with a story that is driven by player volition. What does this mean in practice?
Hundreds of players can play in the same world
There are dozens of active Game Masters, collaborating together on a connected story.
Rather than a fixed schedule, games happen whenever Players and GMs are free to play, providing a degree of freedom from scheduling that working adults can actually adapt to. Play when you can.
There is a main story, or rather a big conflict, but the direction to approach it is completely up to the players.
Due to the online nature of this particular westmarch, the world is always at the players fingertips. Easy to jump in 24/7. In fact, there are places specifically made where you can roleplay as your character even outside of games.
Special systems and mechanics are put in place for players to pursue any goal that makes sense in the world. Providing an almost MMO like experience.
We are fully committed to support new rule set and the content around it.
The story will happen in multiple Arcs, which might have different themes and tones associated with them, but they will be a part of a major interlinked narrative. The core theme of the narrative is Heroic fantasy. New content for the story can be unlocked through player actions interacting with the world. Arcs will be planned and concluded in consistent time periods, usually concluding with a massive multi table conclusion, which we will call a Server event.
Major threats and story links of the arc will be clearly presented to the server and also linked to the characters, so that everyone may connect and change the story that is happening. If all of this seems too generic so far, worry not we have the arc specific information in a separate section called The Primer. Finally, and most importantly whatever you choose to do is what will become of the story.
A full, living world will be supported with multiple text RP channels. A flow of in game time.
